Introducing: Co-Enzyme-Q10

Co-Enzyme Q10 is one of the most important co-enzymes in our body. But what is it? How do we use it? And why should you consider a Co-Q-10 supplement? Nutritionist Jenny Logan explains all.

WHAT IS CO-ENZYME Q10?

Enzymes play a variety of roles in our bodies: digesting food, extracting nutrients and facilitating complex cellular reactions. In order to function properly, enzymes rely on co-enzymes, and Co-Enzyme-Q10 is one of the most important.

Present in every single cell of the body, Co-Enzyme Q10 is needed for the production and release of energy. This makes it especially important for organs which require a lot of energy, such as the heart, brain and kidneys.

DO WE REALLY NEED IT?

Because Co-Enzyme-Q10 is so important in the production of energy, if levels start to drop, so do our energy levels. It is so important to the function of the heart that, apparently, a reduction of 75% would actually cause our heart to stop!

So yes, we really do need it!

HOW DO WE GET IT?

Co-Q-10 is made by the body naturally so, as long as we are eating a healthy balanced diet, theoretically we should have enough. However, this is not always the case.

As we age our ability to produce adequate amounts of Co-Q-10 deteriorates. It is thought that this is one of the reasons why we can feel more tired as we get older. Many nutritionists therefore suggest that people who are feeling tired try a Co-Q-10 supplement, to improve their energy levels.

ON STATINS? – IT COULD BE IMPORTANT!

Statins are an important group of medicines, which are responsible for reducing blood cholesterol levels. They are therefore a vital tool in a Doctors battle to prevent heart disease.

However, many people report side effects, especially low energy and muscle aches, when using Statins. This problem could be related to the fact that Statins may also block the production of Co-Q-10. It is therefore often suggested that people who are taking Statins may find also taking a Co-Q-10 supplement helpful. Indeed, in Canada all statins come with that suggestion on the packet!

HOW DO I CHOOSE A CO-Q-10 SUPPLEMENT?

Co-Q-10 is oil soluble, so when choosing a supplement, ideally look for one in an oil base.

There are many different strengths available. For those people who just want to try it to see if it will improve their energy levels a little, a 30mg product should be enough.

However, for people on Statins or those who are looking for a real boost, it is probably worth looking for a 100mg or even a 300mg supplement!
