How can the bacteria of my Microbiome impact my ability to lose weight?
Continuing our series looking at natural ways to help support weight, in this post I am going to delve into the secret world of our good bacteria – discussing the impact they can have on our eating habits and our ability to lose weight.
Good bacteria, also known as probiotics, are not yet a common weight loss supplement. However, there is currently so much research going on investigating the world of the bacteria which live inside us – known as the microbiome – that I suspect it may become a big thing this year!
OUR MICROBIOME AND ITS IMPACT
Most people are aware that there are bacteria living inside us, and that these bacteria help to support our health and wellbeing. What is less well known, is just how much of an impact these bacteria actually have. One of the most surprising things which can be influenced by our gut bacteria is our weight, and even our food cravings!
Researchers, exploring the fascinating world of the microbiome, have discovered that the bacteria living in the gut of an overweight person are completely different to those residing inside a slim person. Furthermore, these scientists have discovered that our bacteria are in communication with our brain and can make us crave the type of food they thrive on!
So, if your gut is full of bacteria which love a carbohydrate rich snack (who doesn’t), they will send messages to your brain – creating a craving for toast, bread, biscuits etc. They will also send your brain reward signals if you do eat that food!
It may sound a little bit like science fiction to think that the bacteria which live inside us have so much of an impact, but we have seen again and again how changing the good bacteria inside someone can alter how they eat, what they crave and how easily they lose weight.
CHANGING THE BACTERIA
The microbiome is made up of 100 trillion different bacteria, so if we want to change the balance of those bacteria we need to work in high numbers – looking for a product which provides a high bacterial count in every capsule.
If you think about it, 5 billion bacteria will not make as much of a difference as a 30 billion strength product would.
When suggesting a good bacteria product to my clients, I usually go for at least a 30 billion strength product. Anything less, in my opinion, will not make enough of a difference – especially if we are trying to outnumber all those naughty bacteria which are affecting our ability to lose weight.
